About this engine

BMW's last naturally aspirated straight-six, and the most powerful one they built without a turbocharger: 268 hp at 6,700 rpm from three litres, on a 12.0:1 compression ratio with High Precision direct injection. The block is a magnesium-aluminium composite, which is why a 3.0-litre six weighs less than many four-cylinders. Units are tagged "N53" by the yard — visible in the photographs — and come complete with the intake manifold, injectors and coil packs. Injectors and NOx sensors are the known wear items on this family; we can quote a tested set with the engine. Sold as a used import, exactly as it came out of the donor vehicle and as photographed. The engine code above is the one marked on this unit; we confirm it against the stamped engine number before dispatch. Compression and leak-down testing is available on request before you commit, and every unit carries a 3-month warranty against internal mechanical failure.
